If you’ve been thinking about straightening your teeth, you’ve probably been weighing up two options: traditional fixed braces or Invisalign clear aligners. Both can produce beautiful, healthy smiles — and both have their place in modern orthodontics.
But they offer very different experiences. And the right choice isn’t always the one your friend, your colleague, or the internet recommends. It’s the one that fits your mouth, your lifestyle, and your goals.
Here’s an honest, side-by-side guide to help you decide — written from the perspective of someone who plans and delivers both types of treatment every week.
The quick summary:
| Feature | Invisalign | Traditional Braces |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Clear, nearly invisible | Metal or ceramic brackets on teeth |
| Removable | Yes — for eating and cleaning | No — fixed on for the full treatment |
| Treatment time (average) | 6–18 months | 18–36 months |
| Appointments | Every 6–8 weeks | Every 4–6 weeks (adjustments needed) |
| Eating | No restrictions — remove to eat | Many foods to avoid (hard, sticky, chewy) |
| Cleaning | Brush and floss as normal | Requires extra tools and technique |
| Comfort | Smooth plastic — no brackets or wires | Brackets can rub until lips/cheeks adjust |
| Speech | Very slight lisp for 2–3 days | Usually no impact |
| Best for | Mild to moderately complex cases in adults | Complex cases, significant bite corrections, growing teenagers |
| Patient compliance required | High — must wear 20–22 hours daily | Low — braces stay on until removed |
How they work
Both treatments do the same fundamental thing: apply gentle, controlled pressure to guide your teeth into a planned position over time. What differs is how that pressure is applied.
Traditional braces
Small brackets are bonded to each tooth, and an archwire is threaded through them. At each appointment, your orthodontist adjusts the wire to continue moving your teeth. Because the system is fixed and constantly active, braces can handle significant tooth movement and complex bite corrections — which is why they’ve been the backbone of orthodontics for decades.
Invisalign
A full 3D scan of your teeth is used to plan every movement digitally, before you ever put an aligner in. You then wear a series of custom-made clear aligners — each one slightly different from the last — worn for one to two weeks at a time. Across the full series, your teeth move gradually toward the planned result.
As a Gold-level Invisalign provider, I spend a significant amount of time on the planning stage. The quality of your outcome is directly shaped by how well the digital treatment plan is designed — which is why experienced Invisalign clinicians tend to produce better, more predictable results.
The honest pros and cons
Where Invisalign shines
- Discretion. Most people won’t notice you’re wearing them. For adults in professional or client-facing roles, this is often the deciding factor.
- Lifestyle fit. You take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, or brush your teeth. No food restrictions, no getting food caught in brackets, no special flossing tools.
- Comfort. Smooth plastic is gentler on your lips and cheeks than brackets and wires. Most patients find it a very comfortable treatment day-to-day.
- Fewer dental emergencies. No brackets to come loose, no wires to poke the inside of your cheek.
- Visible end goal. You can see a 3D preview of your expected result before you commit to treatment.
Where traditional braces still have an edge
- Complex cases. Severe crowding, significant bite issues, or cases requiring major rotations or vertical movement are sometimes better suited to fixed braces.
- Compliance. Invisalign only works if you wear the aligners 20–22 hours a day. If there’s a concern about remembering to wear them consistently — which can be a factor for younger teenagers — braces may be the more reliable choice.
- Lower patient input. Once braces are on, they stay on. No decisions to make, nothing to remember, nothing to misplace.
“But which one is actually better?”
This is the question every patient asks — and the honest answer is: neither is universally better. They’re different tools that suit different patients and different cases.
For the majority of adults we see at Southwell Dental Care, Invisalign is an excellent choice. Most adult cases involve mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or relapse after childhood orthodontics — all of which Invisalign handles well. And for adults, the lifestyle benefits often matter just as much as the clinical outcome.
For more complex bite corrections — or for patients who know compliance with removable aligners would be a struggle — fixed braces remain a strong option.
At your consultation, I’ll assess your smile carefully, explain what’s realistic with each approach, and give you my honest recommendation. There’s no pressure to choose one over the other. The goal is the right treatment for you.
A few myths worth clearing up
“Invisalign is only for mild cases.”
Invisalign has evolved considerably over the last decade. Today it can handle the majority of adult orthodontic cases — including some cases that once would have required fixed braces. The key factor is the clinical planning, not the system itself.
“Braces are cheaper.”
Not necessarily. Private fixed-brace treatment is often similar in cost to Invisalign, and in some cases more expensive. At Southwell Dental Care, our complete Invisalign package is a single, all-inclusive fee of £3,999 — covering every aligner, all your reviews, refinement aligners, retainers, and professional whitening.
“Invisalign takes longer than braces.”
Often the opposite is true for adult cases. Many Invisalign treatments complete in 6–12 months, whereas comprehensive fixed-brace treatment typically runs 18–24 months. Treatment time always depends on the specifics of your case.
How to decide
If you’re weighing up your options, here are the questions worth sitting with:
- How important is discretion to me, day to day?
- Will I reliably wear aligners for 20–22 hours a day?
- How complex is my case? (A consultation will tell you.)
- What’s my budget, and do I want a single all-inclusive fee or a staged payment plan?
- Do I have any events — weddings, photoshoots, a new job — where I’d prefer a less visible option?
There’s no universally right answer. There’s only the right answer for you.
