5 Tips for Managing Dental Anxiety Before Your Appointment

    If the thought of visiting the dentist fills you with dread, you’re in good company. Dental anxiety affects people of all ages and backgrounds — and it’s one of the most common reasons people put off care. Some feel a low-level nervousness before appointments. Others find the anxiety significant enough that they’ve avoided the dentist for years.

    1. Tell Us Before You Arrive

    This is, above all, the most important thing you can do. When you book your appointment, let us know that you feel anxious. You don’t need to explain why or go into detail. Simply telling us means we can adjust our approach from the moment you arrive.

    In practice, this means we take more time. Each step gets explained before we carry it out. We check in with you throughout and never rush. Knowing that the team is already aware removes one layer of uncertainty — before you’ve even sat in the chair.


    2. Bring Someone With You

    If possible, ask a friend or family member to come along. They don’t necessarily need to come into the treatment room — though that’s something we can discuss. Simply having a familiar face in the waiting room makes a significant difference to how you feel beforehand.

    Many anxious patients find that the anticipation is considerably harder than the appointment itself. A familiar presence nearby helps to ground that feeling. It also reminds you that you’re not doing this alone.


    3. Agree on a Signal to Pause

    Before treatment begins, establish a simple signal with your clinician — a raised hand works well — that means “stop, I need a moment.” Knowing you can pause at any point, without explanation, gives you a sense of control that many anxious patients find genuinely settling.

    4. Try Controlled Breathing Before and During

    Controlled breathing is one of the most well-evidenced techniques for managing anxiety in the moment. The physiological sigh — a double inhale through the nose, followed by a long exhale through the mouth — reduces the stress response quickly and effectively.

    In the waiting room, try this a few times before your name is called. During treatment, slow nasal breathing helps regulate your nervous system and reduce the physical sensations of anxiety. It requires no equipment and no prior experience — just a moment of intention.


    5. Focus on One Appointment at a Time

    Dental anxiety often escalates when we think too far ahead — every treatment, every future appointment, every possible discomfort stacking up at once. Consequently, it helps enormously to focus only on what’s in front of you.

    A check-up is simply a conversation and an examination. Nothing else happens without your knowledge and consent.
